In a Larry King televised interview to air tonite, Senator Barack Obama responds to the the hot mess that is known as the New Yorker’s current cover:

“It’s a cartoon … and that’s why we’ve got the First Amendment,” Obama said. “And I think the American people are probably spending a little more time worrying about what’s happening with the banking system and the housing market, and what’s happening in Iraq and Afghanistan, than a cartoon. So I haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about it.”

Obama goes on to say:

“I’ve seen and heard worse,” he said. “I do think that in attempting to satirize something, they probably fueled some misconceptions about me instead. But that was their editorial judgment.”

I’m not one for exploiting my queens, but in tribute to the holiday weekend I couldn’t resist taking it back to this classic. It will definitely be a hit at BBQs across the nation.

Our National Anthem: Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing vs. Star Spangled Banner

DENVER - Mayor John Hickenlooper’s annual State of the City address may get more attention for what wasn’t included than what was.

At the start of the event Tuesday morning, City Council President Michael Hancock introduced singer Rene Marie to perform the national anthem.

Instead, she performed the song “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” which is also known as the “black national anthem.”

When she finished, the audience responded with mild applause. The national anthem was never performed.

Governor Bill Ritter (D-Colorado) discussed the incident on The Mike Rosen Show on 850 KOA on Wednesday morning, calling it “inappropriate.”

“I don’t think it’s fair artistic expression,” said Ritter.

Inappropriate, I agree. Not a fair artistic expression, I firmly disagree. Ms. Rene Marie sung her heart out to what she obviously felt was “her national anthem.” What do you think?

We Got To Do Better: Ghetto Yearbook Names

COVINA, Calif. — A high school in Covina is considering reprinting yearbook pages that included offensive phony names for members of the Black Student Union.

Charter Oak High School Principal Kathleen Wiard says that she is working with the publisher to replace all pages in the 2008 Chronicle that have incorrect names.Charer Oak High School Yearbook Page

The yearbook handed out earlier this month carried names such as “Tay Tay Shaniqua” for nine Black Student Union members. The principal says students put phony names in the yearbook proofs and failed to correct them before printing. Some students were offended and demanded the books be reprinted.

Wiard says the incident is under investigation.
